How much faster can 10.3 be??

From my experiences studying computer science and software engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology (#1 in the country for SE at the time), a Mac was far better than a PC for my studies. The computer lab we were using at the time was using Solaris/SPARC to host everything, and OS...

    Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther" Won't Support G3

I think this needs to be done... eventually. Although, 10.3 would be too soon. About 4 years after Apple stops selling computers with G3 processors would be more likely. The G3 should have support until about 2006-2007. So I wouldn't worry too much. The Mach-O kernel should be abandoned...

    Is Jaguar worth the money?

You accuse Apple of taking the "Microsoft way", and yet in your review of Jaguar the only thing you do is an obvious new features list... you sound like you've been a Windows user all your life (you only look for obvious new features you'll never use anyway but somehow justify cost and upgrade)...

    Brickhouse - weird thing...

The way firewalls work you deny/allow based on the first rule to the last. So if rule #3 says deny and then rule #4 says allow, it'll deny. If something isn't defined as allow/deny it is deny by default. So the last rule in your firewall correctly is "allow all else." Cheers, Dak

OS X Clock all messed up!!!!!!!

On an 867MHz Quicksilver running 10.1.3, I got the same problem Diablo did. Offset AM/PM, but other than that fine. Cheers, Dak

help my website look good on Macs!

Well, just started looking at the code and already in the first inner table (besides the main one) I see a problem. The table's width is defined as 633 pixels. The table has 3 columns (td), one of 160 width, one of 312 and one of 150. A bit of the code was a little jumbled in there...

Urgent!!! New iMac users needs help!!

A network using USB? I'm sorry but that's just inane. All I can think is that they're trying to force some non-standard NIC card on you or something. If standard TCP/IP signals are sent over the line though I assume there's some converter along the way that converts the signals for USB...

    Heat/Power PC/MAC Processors

Not sure how accurate the figures are at Geek.com, although they have a section there labeled ChipGeek with specs on quite a few processors, some complete, some not. Although it may serve your purpose. Cheers, Dak

Driving under the influence (of big shiny iMacs)? :)

State your opinion: MacOSX on x86

Well, for starters MHz doesn't matter 1 iota when comparing two completely different chip architectures to each other. That's one of the problems Intel is having now... they encouraged the "MHz myth" (and still are) for as long as they could because it was a marketing move. Just look at the...

    PC vs. Mac

I'll second that :) I'd probably have some *nix computer just to keep up to date and keep all my Macs up and running, develop for them and absolutely refuse to let go of them :) If people think Amiga followers are fanatical they have yet to see someone try to take away a Mac owner's computer...

Apple incorporates yet another company into the collective!

Rumor has it Steve got them for really really cheap too. Nothing like impulse bargain buying, eh? Pretty soon he's going to have the whole collection! Cheers, Dak

State your opinion: MacOSX on x86

An Athlon produces far more heat than a PowerPC does. Easily up to 70 watts+. The G4 in comparison draws only about 11.5 watts for the 7400 model (up to 450MHz), and even the 1GHz Apollo only pulls about 21.3 watts. I believe the low power model in the TiBooks is under 10 watts. That's why...

    Mac Converts

(edited above because I accidentally said "TiBook" instead of "PowerBook" for the school... at the time the TiBook didn't exist :p). I think the important part about converting someone is the almost viral effect it can have. It's cumulative when you get someone to try a Mac and they really...

    Terminal thread

Bah, I posted a really long message, then got "No thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the webmaster" and it wasn't in my cache :p Here's a shorter version. Sorry it doesn't provide as much information. I think a couple Mac magazines have posted "How To" guides...

Holy moly! Newton connects with iTunes!

Headlines: Apple refuses to enter the PDA market but agrees to start selling it's 5 year old Newton again due to popular demand (and 50,000 protesters outside 1 Infinite Loop chanting "We want Newtons!"). Apple says it won't support the Newton, upgrade it, or provide any new functionality for...

    Sony VAIO = PBG4

Hmm... on a whim decided to read ZDNet's reviews of some laptops... I notice under "Cons" they list every Mac laptop as having "limited expansion" or "lacks expansion bay." Maybe it's just me, but I haven't seen many laptops boasting "3 expansion bay slots" lately... since laptops became...

    Sony VAIO = PBG4

Would make a great conspiracy theory... unfortunately it's just a screw up on the part of ZDNet. If you click on the middle VAIO you'll see what it really looks like (although don't get your hopes up too high... it doesn't look as good as the PowerBook ;) ). Cheers, Dak

    Mac os 10.2

Apple's been working hard to optimize how the Mach-O kernel and Darwin layers interact. It is *not* easy, and there is room for quite a bit of optimizing still. Expect 10.2 to have quite a few optimizations, although it still won't be done (if 10.1 was considered an avg. 200% speed increase...
