When I click the little red button at the top left of an application's window (firefox, iTunes etc.) the window disappears but it doesn't actually close the application, which remains in the dock. Can I set it so that clicking that red button actually closes the whole application?

Hi, I am using a mini mac with OS X. I have the system settings 'mouse speed' turned up to maximum, but the mouse pointer still moves across the screen a little bit slower than I would like. How can I speed it up more? Would by buying a new mouse change anything? Thanks
