Make sure HP gives you the right driver for your printer. It should have the forth folder on the printer properties with the Printer Utility. Or you are not using the correct driver, or HP has given you the incorrect one.

But when you open the printer, and you go into the properties... Is there any Printer Utility button? Like the following:

Can you print a test page using the Printer Utility? I have a HP printer connected to my SL and I can easily access the scanner and the printer, using the printer utility.

This is an error that is happening to many computers after the last update. Microsoft is (I hope) working on a new update to fix it. It is not only opening email, if you mark one to delete, it can also crash.

I have the exact same combination, and mine works perfectly. Did you press to "Detect Displays"? Did it recognize your monitor specifications? Aren't you using a higher definition as supported by your monitor?

Go to a Apple store and buy a brand new Leopard media. Then it have instructions on how to fix installation issues. I don't know if it will be able to recover your data, as you don't have any backups... I cannot believe you worked years with WINDOWSHIT and didn't learn you need to backup your...
